What’s Japanization of Space Design?
It is not just language translation but the whole transformation process of designing after taking various conditions such as social system, distribution of industrial products, culture, etc. into consideration. Japanization is the designing aimed for the targets in Japan, and Fujiya is specialized in it.


Point 1: Japanizing the Material Sizes
In Asia and Europe, the metric measurement system is used whereas in the U.S. the imperial measurement system. In Japan the metric system is usually used. There are still cases, however, where Japanese traditional measurement system of “shaku” is used. It is sometimes necessary to employ shaku measurements in order to use Japan’s local construction materials. Otherwise, we simply cannot execute construction works.

Point 2: Difference in Rules of Building Standards Act
Japan’s Building Standards Act is stipulated by the central government and enforced by local government offices.  The rules are very minute and concrete, and they are LITERALLY enforced in its strict sense.  In many foreign countries, the building standards act requires a certain level of performances rather than concrete specifications as in Japan.  In case of such performance oriented rules, there is bigger freedom in designing.  In Japan also, the performance oriented rules were partly adopted from 20 years ago, but the rigid rules with concrete specifications are still the mainstream.  It is therefore important in designing structures in Japan to understand the performance oriented rules and Japan’s rigidly stipulated rules in construction materials at the same time.

Point 3: Designing of Earthquake Proof
Japan is undoubtedly one of the most frequently earthquake attacked countries.  In space design, the counterplan for earthquakes is necessary.  It contributes to the safety during and after the construction.  In Japan excellent earthquake proof technology has been developed, and it must be employed to secure safety.
